Saturday Morning Cartoons #107
If You Can't Stand the Heat, Stay Out of the Kitchen...Confidential.
Good morning, fam!
Hope you all had a good week.
It’s hot…like, really hot. Now that it’s officially summer, it’s only going to get hotter.
While I go crank the AC down and turn our house into a beer fridge, check out this week’s recs.
Bust out the cold brew, toss in some extra ice, and let’s get into it.
Here’s what I have for you this morning:
I read Kitchen Confidential for the first time and it makes me wish I would’ve paid more attention to Anthony Bourdain while he was still around. Loved the real, honest perspective and his no-bullshit tone. I’ll probably dive into some of his shows online. (★★★••)
Abby convinced me to watch The Enfield Poltergeist with her and I have to say I was impressed with the format. Not usually big into the supernatural, but they brought the story to life by taking original audio records and reenacting the events. Those actors are doing work. (★★★••)
My buddy Chris and I were itching to use our Alamo Season Passes, so we checked out Bad Boys: Ride or Die. It was…like watching a video game, complete with first-person shooting scenes. Some funny parts, but I’d probably wait until it comes to streaming. (★★•••)
For movie night dinner, we grabbed burgers from Stacked Burger Bar and I built my own. You ready? It had a beef/pork burger, a gluten-free bun, tomatoes, pickled red onions, bourbon bacon maple jam, and a fried egg on top. I got regular fries and their chipotle aioli as a side but if you go, swap for their sweet potato fries with Red Hot Riplets seasoning and stick with the aioli. (★★★★•)
We then watched Hit Man and I gotta hand it to Glen Powell — he definitely has more range than I thought. It’s based off a coo-coo bananas true story about a college professor moonlighting as a fake hit man in police stings. More rom-com than we thought, which wasn’t a bad thing. (★★★••)
We had another random tin fish dinner night and this time, the standout was the Octopus with Lemon & Dill from Tiny Fish Co. I know they’re sentient creatures, but my god do they taste amazing! (★★★★•)
To go with dinner, I made an NA Spritz with Abstinence Blood Orange Aperitif and Eins Zwei Zero Sparkling Reisling and it was just as good as the original. Definitely recommend if you’re thinking about a sober summer. (★★★••)
COFFEE ALERT!!! While swinging through Comet Coffee, I went with their Mahwit Shami Coffee from Manhattan Coffee Roasters (based in The Netherlands, not New York) and holy shit was it some of the best pour over coffee I’ve had! I’m 1000% ordering a bag of their beans as I type this. (★★★★★)
I stumbled across this trailer for A Real Pain and I already can’t wait to see it in October. Jesse Eisenberg is the writer, director, and co-stars next to Kieran Culkin. ‘Nuff said. (★★★★•)
While discussing a Taco Bell reference with my editor via Google Doc comments in my first draft, he shared that I might like Taco Bell Quarterly, a literary publication devoted to (you guessed) Taco Bell. Sounds bonkers but the writing really is beautiful. Check out the most recent issue. (★★★★•)
You made it to the end! As a bonus, I’ll leave you with this.
Cheers,
Billy
