Good morning, fam!
Hope you all had a good week.
Happy belated 248th birthday, America!
What a party, eh? It was just like every other family get together: two senile grandpas arguing with each other while everyone else gets absolutely shit housed. Hey, at least there were fireworks, amirite?
While I go look for our dogs (who are still under our bed), check out this week’s recs.
Pop those red, white, and blue balloons, clean up those Budweiser beer cans , and let’s get into it.
Here’s what I have for you this morning:
I’m just about finished reading The Algebra of Wealth by Scott Galloway and I love his honest perspective on modern-day finance. He breaks everything down and makes it way less complicated, all while writing in his own irreverent voice. Definitely worth the read. (★★★★•)
A few of us saw A Quiet Place: Day One at Alamo and I didn’t like it as much as the first two. Lupita Nyong'ota and Joseph Quinn are phenomenal, but even they can’t change the fact the movie feels like one long video game level. (i.e. Get from point A to point B without making noise). We’ll see what the future holds for the franchise. (★★★••)
For movie night, we watched A Family Affair and it begs the question: How the eff do some movies get made?!? I’m not usually one to comment on the appearances of others, but Zac Efron and Nicole Kidman both have had so much work done, it actually distracted us from how shitty the writing was. Hmm, maybe that was their goal…(★★•••)
Thanks to my editor Jason, I took a deep dive into Dead Eyes, a Serial-esque podcast about one actor’s quest to solve the mystery behind why Tom Hanks fired him for having “dead eyes.” It can feel a little self-loathing at certain points, but his interviews with other famous people are worth the listen. (★★★••)
We went to a friend’s annual karaoke party last night and she sang “Pink Pony Club” by Chappell Roan, who is apparently from Missouri. I hadn’t heard it, so I immediately added it to my “Liked” playlist on Spotify. (★★★★•)
Abby and I hit up a patio on the 4th and played The Fox in the Forest. It’s a trick-taking card game like Rummy but with dope illustrations and power-ups. Quick to learn and you can play it anywhere! (★★★★•)
In my never-ending quest for better sleep, we finally got our new bed, complete with a Helix Moonlight Luxe mattress and I have to say, it’s an absolute game changer. It’s like sleeping on a giant cooling cloud. It really is worth all the podcast ad hype. (★★★★★)
I just became a “Friend of the Pod” and used my discount to get this Crooked t-shirt. What can I say? When it comes to supporting progressive media that is actually helping people get involved, I’m a total brand whore. (★★★★•)
Per Abby’s rec, I started taking these Ritual Multivitamins. Not sure there are any noticeable changes yet, but I can at least check off another “self care” box. Bonus: they’re coated in peppermint oil which makes them taste quite delightful. (★★★★•)
Websites like One Million Checkboxes are the reason I both love and hate the internet. Nothing brings people together like pointless competition. (★★★★•)
You made it to the end! As a bonus, I’ll leave you with this.
Cheers,
Billy
