Good morning, fam!
Hope you all had a good week.
Nothing newsworthy on my end.
Oh, except for JOE BIDEN IS BOWING OUT! I don’t usually get political with this newsletter, but how could you not be excited for KAMALA to take over?!
Deadpool and Wolverine also came out which means it’s a great week for dynamic duos.
While I go make make a “BFFs 4 EVA” bracelet, check out this week’s recs.
Grab your bestie, throw on your matching tees, and let’s get into it.
Here’s what I have for you this morning:
I’m just about finished with The Candy House by Jennifer Egan and I’m not sure I enjoyed it as much as everyone else did. It’s one of the top books of the year and Egan’s previous book, A Visit From the Goon Squad, won a Pulitzer, but I’m not sure I get all of the hype. Cool premise and characters, but the structure can make a tiny bit hard to follow. (★★★••)
I finally saw Kinds of Kindness at Alamo and I have to say it’s a very weird watch. It’s described as an absurdist black comedy anthology film directed and co-written by Yorgos Lathimos and that sounds about right. Didn’t like it as much as his previous movie Poor Things, but it definitely makes you think. (★★★••)
When it comes to Deadpool & Wolverine, I’m utterly speechless. I saw it yesterday after work (seeing it again tomorrow) and as a comic nerd/long-time watcher of the previous MCU and Fox comic book movies, this movie has literally everything. I won’t spoil anything yet, but it has all of the cameos, callbacks, and meta jokes you could hope for in a Deadpool movie. Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman worked their asses off and it shows. (★★★★★)
Abby and I finished our rewatch of The Office Superfan Episodes and I can’t think of a more perfect comedic sitcom. I even appreciated all of the weirdness of Season 8 (Florida, Robert California, Nellie Bertram) this time through. Plus, you get all of the bonus content and extended scenes. (★★★★•)
Thanks to Playstation Plus, I downloaded Steep for free and have been absolutely obsessed. For those of you N64 fans, imagine playing 1080° Snowboarding again but on steroids. You get to free roam the Alps using a snowboard, skis, a paraglider, and a wing suit (complete with a jet pack?!). It’s fun, stunning, and totally replayable. (★★★★•)
We got our next bag of beans from Trade Coffee and it was the Essence Espresso Roast from Alma Coffee. I liked it a lot but it wasn’t as dark as some of the other beans we’ve tried. Super approachable! (★★★••)
Even after telling myself I wouldn’t get as many snacks at Costco, I caved and brought home these Heavenly Hunks Organic Brownies and dear lord are they amazing. Seriously, if you get nothing else on your next trip, get these and you won’t be sorry. (★★★★•)
We were picking up some more tin fish from World Market and I stumbled across these Kit Kat Chocolate Orange from Japan. As someone who loves those chocolate oranges during the holidays, I thought these freaking slapped. (★★★★•)
Anyone else a nerd for fictional brands in movies and TV shows? Check out this Fictional Brands Archive to search for some of your favorites. (★★★★•)
AI can be super confusing to talk about at work or with friends. Here’s a cheatsheet. (★★★••)
You made it to the end! As a bonus, I’ll leave you with this.
Cheers,
Billy
