Good morning, fam!
Hope you all had a good week.
If you read last week’s episode, then you already know what’s coming.
That’s right—we’re diving into recs from last week’s long weekend in Chicago.
While I reminisce about the Windy City, check out this week’s recs.
Pour yourself a shot of Malört, immediately go dump it out, and let’s get into it.
Here’s what I have for you this morning:
If you’re an architecture nerd like Abby, then I would highly recommend checking out the Robie House (designed by Frank Lloyd Wright) in Hyde Park. She got us tickets for the tour and I have to say, for a house built in 1910, it was pretty cutting edge. Too bad it took two years to build and the owner only live there for…a year?! Can you imagine that in today’s economy?! (★★★••)
For our fancier night out, we hit up Kumiko for pre-dinner drinks by the bar and our minds were blown. Abby got their Daiquiri flight (Daiquiri, Sake, and Green Tea) and I got a few mocktails: The Saved By the Bell and the Maple Blues. Both were amazing and I would easily go back to eat a full meal. (★★★★•)
For dinner, we had a late reservation at Avec (from The Bear) and it did not disappoint. We got several small plates but the two best bites were their Chorizo Stuffed Dates and the Short Rib with Sumac Humus. Oh, and for desert? Their Nutter Butter Bites with Espresso. (★★★★•)
The next night, we met a friend out and bar hopped. Personally, my favorite was The Izakaya, a Japanese-style speakeasy where I had THE BEST mocktail of the weekend: their Forbidden Murasaki. It had ube, coconut milk, chai, demarara, and yuzu. So. Freaking. Good. (★★★★•)
OK, now for the coffee. We went to a ton of places, but for me a couple stood out. First was Hexe Coffee near West Lakeview. I got their Behemoth Dark Roast Espresso and their GF/DF Orange Spice Cake. The other was Metric Coffee west of the Fulton Market District. We hit this one up on the way out and holy hell am I glad we did. I got their Fulton St. Handshake (a drip coffee + espresso shot) and Abby got their fall special—the Auburn (their take on a Pumpkin Spice Latte). It was so good, I got a bag of their En Masse espresso beans to go. (★★★★★)
You made it to the end! As a bonus, I’ll leave you with this.
Cheers,
Billy
