Good morning, fam!
Hope you all had a good week.
Abby and I are smack dab in the middle of our two-year anniversary weekend which means I should probably make this short and sweet so we can get back to the fun.
While I continue to confess my undying love, check out this week’s recs.
Take off those matching sweatpants, put on those matching monogrammed robes, and let’s get into it.
Here’s what I have for you this morning:
I blew through two more seasons of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and I’m officially in it for the long haul. It’s the perfect lunchtime show coming in at 20ish minutes and it’s amazing how the show covers everything from health insurance to cannibalism. (★★★★•)
After hearing a bunch of hype, I caved and watched Squid Game: The Challenge. Imagine the original show but as a reality competition where they’re competing for $4.5 million and this time the contestants are “shot” with black ink. I’m rooting fort the mother/son combo. (★★★••)
I’ve been compromising with Abby which means more scary movies. We watched Cobweb and despite it having Antony Starr (from The Boys), it was meh. Not super scary and pretty predictable. (★★•••)
For movie night, we saw Mr. Jon Snow himself on the movie poster and decided to try MI-5. It’s basically a budget James Bond film with, you guessed it, Jon Snow running around London. Some cool scenes but overall meh. (★★•••)
Since the colossal shit-show of Cyberpunk 2077’s initial launch back in 2020 for PlayStation, they apparently worked out a lot of the kinks and recently released Phantom Liberty, a new spy-thriller DLC. I’m about halfway through and pleasantly surprised with how much fun it is. Who wouldn’t love sneaking around a futuristic city with Idris Elba?(★★★★•)
Before movie night, we went to Jovick Brothers for some burgers and my mind was blown. If you’re adventurous like me, I would 1000% recommend the Macklind, a bacon cheeseburger with…wait for it…peanut butter! Their fries and honey mustard were also fire. (★★★★•)
Last night was our big anniversary dinner at Idol Wolf and I was speechless. We went with two of our closest friends (Thanks again Chris and Grace!) and it was a perfect storm of food and ambience. Per usual, you can check out this Insta post for the deep dive, but the highlights were their Grilled Octopus and the Turrón de Chocolate (which is a apparently a “nougat confection.”) I’m already planning our next outing so we can try their Seafood Paella. (★★★★★)
Traditionally, a secondary anniversary gift is supposed to be cotton, but since Abby is anything but traditional, I got her two shirts from The Last Podcast on the Left merch shop. Hey, they’re a cotton blend! (★★★★•)
TIME just came out with their “100 Must-Read Books of 2023” and I have some serious catching up to do. I’ve been deep in the 1000+ page tome that is 1Q84 but I might have to start double dipping… (★★★★•)
Have you seen everything on this “Best Shows of 2023” list from The New York Times? The Bear and Beef were two of my personal faves. (★★★••)
You made it to the end! As a bonus, I’ll leave you with this.
Cheers,
Billy
Went to Idol Wolf before a show at the Jazz Bistro in October. Really imaginative and delicious food that dares you to try something new. Relaxed, exceptional service, without the smug pretense of being the hot new restaurant in town.
