Good morning, fam!
My friend Bob and I decided to take a little road trip to KC to visit another friend Jake and apparently we’re back to summer. It’s 80° everywhere right now and I didn’t pack shorts. Maybe it’s just me, but I was looking forward to, you know, fall.
While I contemplate picking up a pair of Umbros,1 check out these week’s recs.
Make those fart noises with some Nikelodeon Gak Splat, break out that French Toast Crunch, and let’s get into it!
Here’s what I have for you this morning:
After a three-year break, Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples are back with Saga Volume 10 and it is six more chapters of the same epic space opera/fantasy goodness. If you haven’t read this comic series, start with this massive compendium that has the first nine volumes. You won’t be sorry.
Our company hosted their “state of the office” meeting at Chase Park Plaza Cinema where after we had a quick business update, we watched Rocky Horror Picture Show! It was my first time seeing it, so I had no idea that this is usually not a movie you watch with co-workers, especially with NSFW commentary from a local improv group. But hey, we’re not like all those other companies - we’re a cool company. My favorite part? The concession stand was covered, which meant the inner child in me lost his shit.
For movie night, we had to go with Bullet Train. I haven’t seen a movie this hyped since…maybe Titanic? It was entertaining enough with cool cinematography, badass fight scenes, and a bunch of cameos, but I wouldn’t start handing out Oscar noms. Worth the watch, especially if you’re a Brad Pitt fan.2
I downloaded the trial for OlliOlli World on PS5 and gave it a try. After spending way too much time creating video game me, I finally got to the actual game. You might think it’s just another skateboarding game but it’s anything but. You’re on a quest to impress the skate gods as you kickflip your way to Gnarvana and you’re basically playing a cartoon as you’re doing it. Not sure I would buy the full game but 100% worth a try.
On our drive to KC, Bob introduced me to James Hoffmann - the coolest motherfucker on YouTube with the most soothing voice.3 He is a world-renowned barista who knows a thing or two about coffee. We watched his video on how we makes the perfect espresso. It’s definitely not as complicated as I thought, but I quickly learned it’s not the cheapest hobby…
As soon as we walked into Jake’s apartment, I was slapped in the face with the most amazing smell. He had this whiskey and oak candle that I considered stealing, but apparently I can get it from Target, so I guess I’ll be doing that instead.
During our first night out in KC, we grabbed dinner at Beer Kitchen because (hot take) it’s better than any other BBQ spot in the city. I went with the Hogtied sandwich on a gluten-free bun because it’s got their famous burnt ends and that’s all you need to know. I washed it down with a Woodchuck Bubbly Pearsecco Dry Cider. Definitely getting this when we get back to STL.
After dinner, we went bar hopping around the Crossroads and my personal favorite was Afterword Tavern & Shelves. It’s. A. Bookshop. IN. A. BAR!?! After snapping a few too many pics and drunkenly buying a book, the three of us each ordered the Catcher & The Rivalist. It’s apple-infused Union Horse Rivalist Whiskey, maple syrup, cinnamon spiced plantation dark rum, Amaro Nonino, and lemon. I love me a good fall cocktail with a punny name.
Who would’ve thought you could parkour for good?
These days, greedy billionaires are aiming for Mars and big behemoths are exploiting workers. If you ask me, it's giving the tech industry a bad name. Here’s how to work in tech without losing your soul.
You made it to the end! As a bonus, I’ll leave you with this.
Cheers,
Billy
Can you even buy those anymore?
Who isn’t?!
He’s English.
