Good morning, fam!
Hope you all had a good week.
Last weekend, we hosted Abby’s “Vaguely 90’s Backyard Pool Party” for her birthday and it felt like the unofficial start of summer. We had a massive inflatable pool, a bumpin’ 90’s playlist, and water guns.1 What more could you possibly need?
While I go deflate the pool, check out this week’s recs.
Throw those beach towels in the washer, put some aloe on that sunburn, and let’s get into it.
Here’s what I have for you this morning:
Abby and saw The Watchers at Alamo (which was just bought by Sony) and I have to say, I was expecting a little more, especially with the last name Shyamalan attached to it. This was his daughter’s debut as a writer and director which maybe explains why it felt like…a watered down Shyamalan movie? (★★★••)
For “movie night,” we dived into the second half of Bridgerton Season 3 and my heavens! Things got real steamy real quick. I don’t want to give anything away, but let’s just say Lady Whistledown is getting a little sloppy. (★★★★•)
I already mentioned the 90’s-themed playlist, but I didn’t mention that we played Chumbawamba’s “Tubthumping” every time someone showed up? I can’t think of a better way to enter a party. (★★★★★)
Needing something to sip on throughout the day, I tried this Almave Ámbar Non-Alcoholic Blue Agave Spirit and it was delightful. It’s probably the NA spirit that tastes most like the original thing (i.e. tequila). I guess Sir Lewis Hamilton (yup, that one) does more than just drive really expensive cars really fast around a track. (★★★★•)
For Abby’s birthday dinner/present, we had oysters shipped in from Island Creek Oysters and went ham. I know slurping down oysters in the Midwest sounds sketchy, but they were fresher than you’d think. And shoutout to Dylan for giving us a masterclass in shucking! (★★★★★)
We also had tin fish so people wouldn’t starve while we shucked. There were a bunch of different kinds but my favorite was this Portuguese Style Stuffed Squid from MissCan. I’ve never had anything like it before. (★★★★•)
For Abby’s cake, she wanted a Fruity Pebbles Rice Crispy Cake so she got one. And then we had bowls of cereal for breakfast for the next week. My inner child was pumped to eat some of the greatest hits, but my inner (adult) stomach wasn’t very happy with me. (★★★★•)
While catching up with a friend during happy hour at Rockwell Beer Co., I tried their N/A Spritzer and it was perfect for patio weather. It’s N/A Blood Orange Liqueur, N/A Sparking Rosé, Lemon, and Topo Chico. I’ll 100% be making these at home. (★★★★•)
For our next bag of beans from Trade, we got these Monserrate beans from Irving Farm and they’re…good. Not my favorite (they’re a little darker than I thought) but still a solid option for espresso drinks. (★★★••)
Thanks to Tobias van Schneider’s newsletter, I learned about Das Gesamtkunstwerk, a German phrase that describes a work of art that makes use of all or many art forms or strives to do so. I didn’t realize it until now, but this definitely relates to how I choose creative projects. (★★★★•)
You made it to the end! As a bonus, I’ll leave you with this.
Cheers,
Billy
Thanks, Paulie!
