Good morning, fam!
Hope you all had a good week.
Who’s ready for a long weekend? I know I am ever since I found out we have Monday off. (Hey, things have been a little bonkers around here.)
While I go figure out what the heck I’m going to do, check out this week’s recs.
Mute all work notifications, close your laptop, and let’s get into it.
Here’s what I have for you this morning:
I just finished reading The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao and hot damn, I loved Junot Díaz and his writing. He did such a great job balancing a sad story with pop culture/nerd humor and amazing character development. Can’t recommend this book enough. (★★★★•)
Abby and I decided to finally watch Modern Family from the beginning and it still holds up. We’re almost finished with the first season and I forgot how damn funny this show is. Sophía Vergara is basically a modern-day Lucille Ball. (★★★★★)
After finishing my rewatch of New Girl, I started searching for my new quick watch during lunch. First up was Corporate on Paramount+ and it was…meh. Love the pot shots at corporate America, but it’s not as funny as I would’ve hoped. (★★•••)
I then tried Baskets on Hulu because Zach Galifianakis is freaking hilarious but it was also meh. He plays a clown who flunks out of a prestigious clown college in Paris and moves back to California to try and make it. Oh, apparently it’s produced by Louis C.K. so, yeah…(★★•••)
I finally landed on 30 Rock and it did not disappoint. I know, I’m super late to the game on this one, but I’m already enjoying the insane rate of jokes per minute. I’m eager to see how the show evolves. (★★★★•)
For movie night, we obviously went with Twisters and after showing up as my friends were finishing the original, I can’t recommend watching them back-to-back enough. The new one is basically the same movie, but with wayyy better VFX…and Glen Powell. If this was real life, we would be dead five times over. (★★★••)
I was already on board with “Espresso,” but now that Sabrina Carpenter’s new album Short n’ Sweet is out, I’m all in. I’m a big Charlie XCX fan, but this might be the album of the summer. (★★★★•)
Abby and I checked out the Museum of Illusions STL and after blowing through in 45 minutes flat, we obviously hit up the gift shop. I have no idea why, but they had Punchkins and I got this one because duh.1 (★★★••)
Abby has college friends in town so we took one of them to Bar Moro for tapas. I’m happy to announce we’re three for three on main dishes. This time around, we all shared their Butcher’s Choice which was a Sliced Pork Shoulder in a Luxardo Cherry Sherry Sauce. It was basically dessert…until we got their Churros with Hazelnut Dip…for dessert. (★★★★•)
Thanks to our Whole30ish diet at home, I’ve been feeling a lot better. And honestly? Snacks like this Banana & Dark Chocolate Organic Fruit Jerky from Solely make it a whole helluva lot easier. These things are straight fire! (★★★★•)
You made it to the end! As a bonus, I’ll leave you with this.
Cheers,
Billy
Coffee and puns. That’s basically my entire personality.
