Good morning, fam!
Hope you all had a good week.
We all know the most underrated part of a long holiday weekend is the short week that comes after and this week was no exception.
I blinked and it was suddenly Saturday morning.
While I double-check to make sure today is actually Saturday, check out this week’s recs.
If you’re accidentally at work, speed home, change into your weekend pants, and let’s get into it.
Here’s what I have for you this morning:
A few of us saw Blink Twice at Alamo and boy was it a wild ride. Fortunately, they provided a trigger warning at the beginning for sexual violence because there are a few parts that are really hard to watch but for Zoe Kravitz’s directorial debut, I’d say she created something that people won’t forget.1 (★★★••)
Since the sequel came out yesterday, Abby and I watched Beetlejuice to prepare. The visuals are just as cheesy as ever, but it really does prove Michael Keaton has insane range. We’ll probably see the new one tomorrow. (★★★★•)
I watched the first two episodes of English Teacher on Hulu and I was pleasantly surprised. It’s hard not to go into a show like this without comparing it to Abbott Elementary, but it’s a funny, refreshing take on how politics play an inevitable part in high school, whether we like it or not. Worth a watch. (★★★••)
As a post-therapy treat, I stopped by Sump Coffee and tried their Bazooka Bubblegum. I’m not usually one for flavored espresso drinks, but it sounded too good to pass up. It’s espresso, lemon juice, lavender syrup, and elderflower tonic. It does, in fact, taste like the gum from our childhood but even with half the syrup, it was still a little too sweet for me. (★★•••)
On Thursday, a few of us tried Expat BBQ for dinner and as the new Gerard Craft kid on the block, it was an interesting addition to the STL BBQ scene. The best way I can describe it is as “exotic bbq.” We got Fried Kimchi Pickles and Jerk Chicken Wings as starters and then Abby and I split the Pork Shoulder2 and St. Louis BBQ Style Ribs. Thank god it’s in the Foundry because you’re definitely going to need a post-dinner walk after. (★★★••)
On the way home from our friends’ pop punk cover bank gig last night, we drove through Raising Caine’s for some late nite eats and I got their two-piece kid’s meal because I’m a goddamn adult and I can do whatever I want. The chicken and sauce were obviously fire but the organic apple juice box was trash. (★★★★•)
I’m wrapping this episode up from Comet Coffee and just tried their Marciano Tomazini Brazilian Blend from Tokyo. Pretty tasty but not my favorite pour over I’ve gotten here. (★★★••)
Anyone else curious to see how Linkin Park’s new singer stacks up against Chester Bennington (RIP)? They’re kicking off their first new album since 2017 with a world tour (that is not coming to STL…) (★★★••)
As kids, we all made up our own weapons in rock, paper, scissors. Ever wonder what else can beat rock? Play this game and find out. (★★★••)
Avast, ye nateys! For all you #booknerds out there, check out Google’s “Ocean of Books.” I wasted wayyy too much time clicking around. (★★★★•)
You made it to the end! As a bonus, I’ll leave you with this.
Cheers,
Billy
Apparently she wanted to called it P***y Island but the studio refused to market it.
Pro tip: Add the leftovers to eggs the next morning for a fire omelette.
