Good morning, fam!
Hope you all had a good week.
We did it, ya’ll. As a reward for making it through the holidays (even though we have our rescheduled extended family Christmas today), we get to celebrate Dead Week!
That’s right—the glorious week between Christmas and New Year’s where nothing matters, time ceases to exist, and the only thing we’re expected to do is shower once in a while.
While I look at a calendar and remind myself what day it is, check out this week’s recs.
Keep that work laptop closed, tee up the next season of whatever you’re bingeing, and let’s get into it.
Here’s what I have for you this morning:
UPDATES
One Too Many had our holiday show and (spoiler alert) WE leaked our own holiday album FIVE GOLDEN SINGS! Hey, can you blame us? It’s hard out here for post-collegiate, semi-professional a cappella groups. Go stream it before January 1st when all holiday music is banned.
After a teeny break, SNARK AVE. is posting again and things are snarkier than ever! Expect the first merch drop soon…ish ;)

While at Powell’s Books in Portland a few weeks back, I stumbled across The Phantom Tollbooth and realized I had never read it when I was a kid. So, I brought it home and promptly breezed through it. It’s cute, has a ton of wordplay that is right up my alley, and has a positive message. Oh, and Jules Feiffer’s illustrations give the book its iconic, whimsical style. It’s a solid read as far as children's lit goes. (★★★••)
Abby and I finally got back on track with holiday movies and watched Red One, the new holiday action flick from The Rock. I have to say, compared to what I read online, I surprisingly liked it more than I thought. It won’t be winning any awards, but it’s a (somewhat) wholesome holiday movie to watch with the whole fam. (★★★••)
I downloaded Gris for PS5 for free (thanks to PlayStation Plus), and DEAR GOD, I was not ready for what I experienced over the next 4-5 hours. This game beautifully integrates a breathtaking visual style, amazing level design, and stunning music in a way that is creative and seamless. So much so that there were moments when I literally cried. On my couch. By myself. You HAVE to play this game. (★★★★★)
Speaking of video games, I finally downloaded Marvel Rivals, and once I found a few characters I liked, I was freaking hooked! It’s a superhero, team-based PVP that allows you to play as your favorite Marvel heroes, and you can even unlock unique team-ups based on the characters you and your teammates choose. It can get pretty chaotic at times, but it’s some of the biggest bang for your buck you’ll get on PlayStation.1 (★★★★•)
Some friends and I went out for Christmas Eve Eve, and after a late night of karaoke at Platypus, I took home a gluten-free, dairy-free Cruella Ice Cream Sandwich from Sugar Witch. My GOD, was it scrumtrulescent! Like, maybe the best ice cream sandwich I’ve had in recent memory, dairy-free or otherwise. If you’ve never had anything from Sugar Witch, I beg you to fix this injustice immediately. (★★★★•)
You made it to the end! As a bonus, I’ll leave you with this.
Cheers,
Billy
I.e. It’s free.
