Good morning, fam, and Happy New Year!
Hope you all had a good week.
Now that it’s 2025, I’m sure we’re all on our resolution game. Some of us may be doing a “Dry January,” and others might be hitting the gym. There might even be a few enlightened folks out there who have sworn off resolutions altogether and are sticking to whatever gets them through the day.
Either way, you do you.
While I look back at my failed resolutions from the past year, check out this week’s recs.
Get ready to leave for the gym, plop down on the couch and admit to yourself that you were never really going to go to the gym, and let’s get into it.
Here’s what I have for you this morning evening:

Wow. I ended 2024 with a bang. Solito was the other book I picked up at Powell’s Books in Portland, and I just finished reading it on New Year’s Eve. I really can't fathom being a NINE-YEAR-OLD traveling 3,000 miles from your home to a completely new country. Javier Zamora did such a beautiful job with this memoir. Add it to your 2025 reading list. Now. (★★★★•)
Abby and I saw Nosferatu at Alamo, and now that I’ve had a few days to think on it, I have mixed feelings. My biggest question: Why did Robert Eggers make this now? Other than some of the occult elements, it didn’t feel like he had a unique take on the story. Visually, it was stunning, and Lily-Rose Depp deserves an Oscar alone just for the scenes where Count Orlok possesses her. Speaking of him, my only other complaint was his character design. He didn’t look nearly as spooky as the previous versions... (★★★••)
Last night, Abby and I were looking for a classic comedy, so we naturally watched Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. It really is one of the most quotable movies ever made. If you watch the unrated/uncut version, you get some extra lines and so improved riffs. (★★★★•)
How do you celebrate a friend’s birthday when you’re in your 30’s? Why, hibachi, of course! We went to Kobe Steakhouse in Westport, and damn, was it a good time! We witnessed flaming onion volcanoes, we had shrimp flung at our faces, and we even dodged the occasional rogue egg. As my entree, I went with the Ahi Tuna and Filet Mignon, which were both fire. Pro tip: Ask for extra teriyaki and yum yum sauce to go. (★★★★•)
One of my New Year’s resolutions is to cut back to one cup of (caffeinated) coffee a day,1 so I bought a bag of Moxie EA Sugarcane Decaf beans from Comet Coffee and finally made a cup. Hot damn, was it tasty! Who knew decaf could actually taste like the real thing?! The tasting notes are spot on: dried plum, torched sugar, and dark chocolate. If this is what decaf can taste like, then I’m sold. (★★★★★)
You made it to the end! As a bonus, I’ll leave you with this.
Cheers,
Billy
Lame, I know.
