Good morning, fam!
Hope you all had a good week.
Welp, like it says above, 2025 is looking a little too much like “A Song of Fire and Ice” — fire on the West Coast and ice here in the Midwest.
If you’re reading this and you still think “climate change is a hoax,” first of all, unsubscribe. Then go look out the window and tell me our weather patterns aren’t royally fucked.
While I go outside and dig out my car for the fourth time, check out this week’s recs.
Lace up those boots, throw on your oversized parka, and let’s get into it.
Here’s what I have for you this morning:
LINKS
Márquez was a blindspot for me, but after seeing the series drop on Netflix last month, I decided to read 100 Years of Solitude. You know how sometimes you read a book or watch a movie and the ending ruins the entire experience? Yeah, this was the exact opposite. A lot of the book felt a little confusing due to a ton of characters with similar names and overlapping arcs, but the ending hit me like a ton of bricks. It was definitely one of those stories where your patience pays off in the end. The prose is next-level and the story is tragically beautiful. Excited to see how the Netflix series captures everything on screen! (★★★★•)
Abby and I decided to watch The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, and it was exactly what you’d expect from Guy Ritchie: an action-packed WWII flick (loosely) based on the true story of a motley crew neutralizing Hitler’s fleet of U-boats. It stars a charismatic Henry Cavill, a SUPER-jacked Alan Ritchson, and a horrifically miscast Rory Kinnear as Winston Churchill, complete with some of the worst makeup I’ve seen in a movie. It won’t be winning any awards, but the action scenes are worth the watch. (★★★••)
I popped over to Local Harvest to grab an NA bevy for movie night, and I came across these Desert Margarita Agave Mocktails from Parch for the first time. Easily the best marg mocktail I’ve had since quitting booze. It’s a little sweet, a little smokey, and just tangy enough. Can’t wait to try the other flavors! (★★★★•)
On the way back from a family get-together, we stopped by a random gas station, and I stumbled across…wait for it…PB& muthafuckin’ J M&Ms!!! I know, I know! I freak out about snacks a lot, but these are brand new, and they’re straight fire. The only issue is they’re so new, I can’t find them anywhere else! Not even QT or 7-11, the Meccas of Muchies! If you stumble across them, holla at your boi. (★★★★★)
Speaking of amazing snacks, during our pre-snowpocalypse trip to Costco, I found these Street Corn Toasted Snack Crackers from Craize, and I literally can’t stop eating them.1 You can eat them on their own, spread some peanut butter and honey on top, or crush them up into soup. Hell, you can even do what I did and dip them in this Hot Honey Hommus from Cedar’s, which is apparently a new brand of hummus at Schnucks. The snack game was strong this week. (★★★★•)
You made it to the end! As a bonus, I’ll leave you with this.
Cheers,
Billy
Yes, I’m even eating them as I type this.
