Good morning, fam!
Hope you all had a good week.
It’s a new year, which means it’s also time for a new nose.
After punting a few times, I finally sucked it up and got my deviated septum fixed on Thursday. Since then, I’ve been in and out of consciousness on our couch while also leaking nonstop from my face.1
Buy, hey! At least I’ll be able to breathe again…in a week.
While I go look in the mirror for the one-hundredth time to see if there’s any swelling, check out this week’s recs.
Pop another round of painkillers (only if you need them), get cozy, and let’s get into it.
Here’s what I have for you this morning:

I finally picked up The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and tore through it. For a sci-fi book based on a 1978 radio comedy written in 1979, it's still super relevant and predicted some of today's tech (laptops and tablets, translation software, etc). Honestly, even with the other four novels, I wish it would've been a little longer and gone deeper into each character. Who knows? Maybe I'll finish the series...at some point. (★★★••)
I finished Creature Commandos this week, and I have to say it kind of fizzled out for me. I enjoyed the dark humor and James Gunn’s uncanny ability to make us care about yet another misfit group of antiheroes, but the main plot…doesn’t really matter. We’ll see how it ties into the larger DCU after Superman comes out. (★★★••)
Abby and I saw The Brutalist at Alamo on Sunday, and we were both blown away. It’s about a Hungarian-Jewish architect who immigrates to the United States shortly after WWII and lucks his way into his first commission in the States. It’s sad, moving, and is one of the best-designed movies I’ve seen, even down to the credits. Heads up: It’s 3 hours and 35 minutes with a mandatory 15-minute intermission. (★★★★•)
I did it, ya’ll! By some miracle of God, I found possibly the last Talia Peppermint Bark Brownie and Pink Peppermint Ice Cream Sandwich from Sugarwitch in the back of a freezer at Local Harvest. This was 2024’s seasonal GF/DF sandwich and the last time I called, they said they had sold out for the year. As someone who is obsessed with chocolate and peppermint, it was every bit as delicious as I imagined. Absolutely perfect. (★★★★★)
Thanks to some leftover holiday cash from family, I picked up these Luna Bermudez Columbian beans from Manhattan Coffee Roasters at Comet and just tried my first cup. Holy crap is it good! I think I’m getting more blueberry and custard from the tasting notes, but my tastebuds could be effed thanks to a nose full of snot and blood, so who knows?2 (★★★★•)
You made it to the end! As a bonus, I’ll leave you with this.
Cheers,
Billy
*Thanks, Chris ;)
