Good morning, fam!
Hope you all had a good week.
As a man of my word, I’m excited to announce the winner of the “$52 for 52 weeks” giveaway unofficially brought to you by Venmo.1
As the newest subscriber to join the SMC fam, I’d like to congratulate Taylor Green for winning the $52!
It really is crazy to think I’ve been at this for over a year now. I guess it’s time to grow up, sell out, and find a few actual sponsors.
While I find emails for people at Brooklinen or BetterHelp, check out this week’s recs.
Pause that podcast, pull your car over, and let’s get into it.
Here’s what I have for you this morning:
I finally got around to reading The Obstacle is the Way which is basically Ryan Holiday’s crash course on Stoicism. TL;DR: It’s an ancient Greek philosophy that says you can’t control what happens to you but you can control how you react. I love reading the right book at the right time.
It was a TV-heavy week for my starting with the finale of Queen Charlotte. Two out of the three of us made it without sobbing. I’ll let you guess who ;)
In case you haven’t seen any of Dave, do yourself a favor and start from the beginning. You’ll appreciate the rise of Lil Dicky (yes, he’s a real rapper) even more. I’m still trying to figure out how the hell he pulled of the finale of season three?!?
I’ve finally accepted Succession is over, which means it’s obviously time to start another prestige HBO show. I watched the first episode of The Idol and wow, it’s definitely a 180 from watching billionaire brats stab each other in the back. It’s about a pop idol (Lily-Rose Depp) coming back from a nervous breakdown and she finds inspiration in a nightclub owner (Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye). Speaking of which, he’s also the co-creator and producer which explains why they were able to shoot the show in his massive LA mansion.
I have a confession to make. A few weeks back, I shared the hot take that The Last of Us Part 2 was the best sequel ever made in any type of media. After seeing Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse I can 1000% admit I was wrong. I don’t care if you’re not a fan of Spider-Man, comics, or animated movies, this movie has once again changed the course of animation and storytelling. The co-directors even brought in a 14-year-old to help create one of the scenes after seeing his video on YouTube! Seriously, go (re)watch the first one and then get your ass to a theater to see this near-perfect masterpiece.
During movie night, we watched The Super Mario Bros. Movie and it’s exactly what you’d expect. It’s a tight hour-and-a-half video game with some cute jokes. Definitely watch the post-credits scene for peek into the sequel.
I’ve been wanting to explore the world of zero-proof drinks for a while now and after seeing this non-alcoholic spicy pineapple margarita on TikTok, I think it’s a sign.
I’m not a big sports guy but even I couldn’t ignore the news that Lionel Messi is coming to the MLS and joining Inter Miami FC. After taking a closer look at his new deal, it makes A LOT more sense. After all, he passed on a billion-dollar deal with the Saudis?!
I made a thing! Check out my “Book Club of One” t-shirt I made on Instagram. If you’re also a book club of one, then fill out this form and I’ll let you know when they’re for sale.
For this week’s Funny Business post, the hint is: the best thing since sliced bread. Take a look here.
You made it to the end! As a bonus, I’ll leave you with this.
Cheers,
Billy
