Good morning, fam!
Hope you all had a good week.
Welp, the battle of the billionaires rages on.
While rumors of a supposed cage match continue to swirl between Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk, Zuck decided to come out swinging by dropping Instagram’s new Twitter clone called Threads.
After joining the night it went live, I have to say it reminds me of the early days of MySpace or Tumblr - everyone’s goofing around, figuring things out and we’re not being visually assaulted by ads…yet.
While I post some angsty song lyrics on Threads, check out this week’s recs.
Dust off that .edu email, delete those cringey Facebook posts from a decade ago, and let’s get into it.
Here’s what I have for you this morning:
After blowing through Elif Batuman’s first novel The Idiot, I promptly picked up the sequel Either/Or and devoured it, too. There’s something comforting about hanging out with the same character across a few books as you see them grow and change. Wait, is this what being a parent is like?!
After all the hype, we finally saw Asteroid City (at Alamo Drafthouse of course)1 and thanks to AI taking over the world, it was like watching an hour-and-a-half-long TikTok. Aesthetic. Vibey. Mildly confusing. I think it was about…grieving?
Alas, Abby and I said farewell to yet another amazing season of Rick and Morty. Season six was just as funny, weird, and meta as the others and had a bunch of highlights. We even agreed on the best episode! Here’s a hint: fortune cookies.
I’ll be honest - I can be pretty picky when it comes to podcasts, but after Abby sold me, I gave The Witch Trials of J.K. Rowling a try. Ya’ll, drop what you’re doing and go listen to this. No matter how you feel about Harry Potter or cancel culture, it’s totally worth listening to. It goes deep into the controversy with each episode focusing on a different perspective (her personal life, religion, internet culture, etc.)
After asking if I wanted anything from Target,2 I gave Abby a challenge: can you find a snack you think I’ll like that is dairy-free and gluten-free. Once again, she knocked it out of the park and brought home Cinnamon Churro Chips from Siete. They’re sweet, savory, and…already gone. Probably for the best.
Whenever I’m at a coffee shop and see something like “Grapefruit Espresso Tonic” on the menu, the Leo in me kicks in and I can’t say no.3 It’s got three of my favorite things! I tried the one at Road Crew Coffee and I’m excited to announce this is the summer of…I can’t think of a name for this drink, but if you have one, let me know!4
Welp thanks to my youngest, coolest friend Parker, I’ve been introduced to the addictive YouTube channel that is Good Mythical Morning. No, it’s not a kid’s morning show with unicorns or dragons - most of their videos are based on trying one of every flavor of something (i.e. One of every Oreo snack). Love the concept, a little iffy on the hosts.
Speaking of trying one of everything, have you taken a look at the Condiment Packet Gallery?! If not, you’ll thank me later ;)
#BookTok sells so many books, TikTok is now getting into the publishing game. I can already hear millennial authors everywhere dusting off their old True Blood fan fiction manuscripts…
For this week’s Funny Business post, the hint is: Now with freshly-sliced meats!
You made it to the end! As a bonus, I’ll leave you with this.
Cheers,
Billy
Seriously, holla at ya boy Alamo!
The answer is obviously yes 1000% of the time.
Meaning I’m extra AF.
He said after thinking about it for wayyy too long.
