Good morning, fam!
Hope you all had a good week.
Remember last week’s comment about me chillin’ in a cabin in the woods? Well, thanks to two of my ride or dies, that’s exactly what I’m doing as I type this.
In a saintly display of hospitality, my friends Bob and Jess let me tag along for their Colorado vacation and we’re staying at an AirBnb straight out of an animated Disney movie in the mountains of Colorado Springs.1
While I go splash in this babbling brook, check out this week’s recs.
Get your hiking boots, breath in that fresh mountain air, and let’s get into it.
Here’s what I have for you this morning:
One of the best parts of vacation is obviously more time to read which is why I was finally able to finish National Dish from food writer Anya Von Bremzen.2 The premise? Anya explores the history of six major world cities by traveling to each, interviewing prominent food people, and preparing one or two of their national dishes. The writing can get a little dense at moments, but if you love food, you’ll eat this up.3 (★★★★•)
I finished Secret Invasion and I’m bummed to say it’s one of the weakest Marvel shows on Disney+. Olivia Colman and Emilia Clarke carry the show and there’s a pretty badass fight scene in the last episode, but overall, it departs from the source material and suffers from some pretty major plot holes. (★★•••)
Have you ever randomly thought, “I wonder how bad the first season of Fear Factor is?” We thought the same thing which is why we watched one of the first episodes a few nights ago. It’s so bad, it’s good. It’s got cringey 90’s dialogue, fake conflict between contestants, and more leather jackets than The Matrix. (★★★••)
Next up in my Tomb Raider trilogy was Rise of the Tomb Raider. There was a huge leap in graphics from the first which helped considering you start the game scaling a Siberian mountain peak. Gameplay can still get a little repetitive, but stunning levels and decent story more than make up for it. (★★★••)
On our roadtrip here, I was introduced to the divine nectar that is Celsius Sparkling Peach Vibe It’s a light, refreshing, and has enough caffeine to take the edge off. Pro tip: stick with Sparkling White Peach. (★★★★•)
Another roadtrip snack that blew my mind was a Kit Kat Churro. It’s exactly what it sounds like - chocolate, cinnamon, and sugar. What more could you possibly ask for from a snack? (★★★★•)
For our first brunch in Colorado Springs, we hit up Denver Biscuit Company. We kicked things off by splitting their Giant Biscuit Cinnamon Roll4 and then I went with The Dahlia biscuit sandwich (a sausage patty, apple butter, a fried egg, and maple syrup). If you’re ever in town, you have to check it out. (★★★★•)
Thanks to a nice barista at Coma Coffee, we spent a decent chunk of the drive bopping along to the Spice Girls Radio playlist on Spotify. If you’re a millennial, it will instantly transport you back to the good ‘ol days of Tiger Beat and Tamagotchis. No notes. (★★★★★)
While doing some NA cocktail research, I came across this post that shows “How to Create the Perfect Nonalcoholic Home Bar.” (★★★••)
OK, so maybe I could become a cat person, but only if it looks like this. (★★★••)
You made it to the end! As a bonus, I’ll leave you with this.
Cheers,
Billy
My soundtrack is a babbling brook snaking through our back yard and birds chirping.
Anyone else have a habit of bringing more books than you could possibly ready? Just me?
Sorry, I couldn’t help it :)
Make sure you get it with the bacon bits on top!
