Good morning, fam!
Hope you all had a good week.
Our first Halloween in our new home was…a little anticlimactic. We were ready to face hordes of little weirdos and hear all of the jokes, but we only ended up with a few groups who were brave enough to face the cold.1
But the show must go on! This week, we’re prepping for our housewarming/BYOS2 party and we’re not messing around. We’ve got chicken tenders to order, furniture to assemble, and firewood to collect for the Solo Stove.
Don your favorite flannel, grab a 30 rack of shitty beer, and let’s get into it.
Here’s what I have for you this morning:
Wow. I can't remember why I picked up A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, but boy am I glad I did. It's a beautiful, semi-autobiographical story about a young girl's coming-of-age in Brooklyn at the turn of the 20th century. Highly recommend! (★★★★•)
I finished Sex Education Season 3 last night and I was blown away. I don’t think there’s another show out there that balances raunchy, sexual humor with sincere storylines and character development. Plus, they nailed the villain casting with Jemima Kirke as the new headmistress (aka Jessa from Girls). (★★★★•)
I forgot to mention last week, but I saw Killers of the Flower Moon at Alamo and it definitely hit hard. I haven’t seen all of Scorsese’s films, but this one was a beautiful/tragic look at yet another reason why America’s past isn’t as great as you might think. (★★★★•)
We went the romantic route for movie night and watched Far from the Madding Crowd which I’m pleased to say was much better than I expected. After all, who doesn’t love a love…rectangle?…especially when British accents are involved. (★★★••)
What better way to spend Halloween night giving out candy and watching Breaking Dawn Part 2? Thanks to some frigid temps and insane wind, we didn’t get a ton of trick or treaters which meant we could fully unpack how weird/creepy Jacob’s story arc ends.3 (★★•••)
A few of us had a hankering for Mexican this week and thanks to some nudging,4 we tried Tacos Wey for the first time. Ya’ll, if you live in STL, you HAVE to try it. I got three tacos (Carne Asada, Campechano, and Al Pastor), Bob got the Quesabirria tacos, and Jess got the Birria Ramen. For dessert? Their Caramel Churros. Pro tip: Drizzle them in Hershey’s Chocolate Sauce and it will blow your mind. (★★★★★)
Looking for a dairy-free/gluten-free snack that doesn’t suck? I can’t remember where I found Caramel Chocolate Peanut Butter Frooze Balls, but I will never forget the name and how good they are. A near-perfect snack! (★★★★•)
Feeling nostalgic? Check out these Internet Artifacts for a blast from the past. My favorite was easily Homestar Runner. (★★★••)
Thanks to Tim (a new friend I made at a coffeeshop), I recently dived into the world of itch.io. It’s basically a marketplace for indie computer games. While you’re there, try out his game Snack Slugger! (★★★••)
Growing up, I always thought being average was a curse. I recently changed my mind and wrote about “The Merits of Mediocrity.” (n/a)5
You made it to the end! As a bonus, I’ll leave you with this.
Cheers,
Billy
Whoever the last two kids were ended up getting half a bowl of candy each.
Bring Your Own Sauce (more on this next week)
Definitely some groomer vibes…
Thanks, Cameron!
I’m going to stop rating my own writing because it feels weird, lol.
