Good morning, fam!
Hope you all had a good week and a Happy New Year!
Anyone else on the struggle bus coming back to work? I had 100+ tabs open (both literally and mentally) when I closed my computer for holiday break and it took me until…(checks watch)…right about now to get back into the swing of things.
On the bright side, I reviewed all of my journal entries for 2023, planned my priorities for 2024, and settled on a theme for the new year: quality over quantity. We’re talking everything from creative projects to relationships to clothes .
While I intravenously down four double espresso shots and figure out how to purge half of our shit, check out this week’s recs.
Re-up that gym membership, do a few pushups, and let’s get into it.
Here’s what I have for you this morning:
I don’t think I’ve ever read a more perfect book at a perfect time. Thanks to a co-worker of mine, I blew through Designing Your Life in a few days and have immediately started going through the framework. What’s it about? The authors teach you how to use design thinking in order to answer the question, “What do you want to be when you grow up.” I think I just found my dream job description. (★★★★★)
Another week, another two seasons of It’s Always Sunny Season down (seasons 10 and 11 to be exact). The standout episodes were easily “Charlie Work” (a non-stop episode showing Charlie frantically prepping for a health inspection) and “Being Frank” (a first-person perspective of a day in the life of Frank). (★★★★•)
Thanks to a free trial of Showtime, we’re watching The Curse and let’s just say the show lives up to its name. Emma Stone1 and Nathan Fielder do a perfect job playing a cringey HGTV couple who rebrand gentrification. Definitely worth watching! (★★★★•)
What do you do when you’re not exactly sure what you want to watch for movie night? Duh, you obviously watch Extraction. This movie was so nuts, there was a 12-minute “continuous” take that included two car chases, two fight scenes, a roof jump, and a tumble off an awning. Chris Hemsworth is basically Thor and John Wick rolled into one. (★★★••)
A new year means new podcasts! After seeing it pop up everywhere, I finally listened to the first two episodes of Say More with Dr? Sheila. It’s hosted by Amy Poehler, so you already know it’s funny as hell. She plays an inept couples therapist who invites couples on to discuss their issues. The best part? It’s all improv and her guests are actually famous comedians. (★★★★•)
I picked up XIII for PlayStation for $5?! and gave it a quick play through. It’s Goldeneye 007 with the art direction of Archer. Short, simple, and fun. (★★★••)
Speaking of GoldenEye, we decided to celebrate NYE old school and did a bunch of fun “grown-up kid” stuff. We started the night by going to 3 Little Monkeys and playing N64 games, came back home and started The Office Lego set, colored in our Bob’s Burger coloring book, and ended the night with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. (★★★★•)
You’ve NEVER heard Outkast’s “Hey Ya” like this. After I did, I watched all of David Michael Wyatt’s cover videos. (★★★★•)
Have you ever wondered what hospitals of the future will look like? Thanks to Healthcare Brew, you don’t have to anymore. (★★★••)
As we kick off 2024 and make all kinds of resolutions, remember: what you pay attention to - expands. (★★★★•)
You made it to the end! As a bonus, I’ll leave you with this.
Cheers,
Billy
