Good morning, fam!
Hope you all had a good week!
We’re one month into 2024 which means it’s time to check in with those New Year’s resolutions! We may have “adjusted” our Whole30 diet to be a lot less…Whole30, but on the flip side, we have been working out at home.
Not to brag,1 but ya boi went five days straight with his fitness routine - stretching because I’m 35, bodyweight stuff to warm up (again, because I’m 35), and then weightlifting with barbells or rowing.
Mentally, I’m feeling better than I have in a long time. Physically, I’m still having trouble sitting…
While I find a heating pad for my butt, check out this week’s recs.
Blend up those kale smoothies, start those fitness trackers, and let’s get into it.
Here’s what I have for you this morning:
I’ve been reading through Human Target Volume One an issue at a time before bed and it’s unlike any other comic I’ve read. It’s a detective noir story of a regular man among superheroes and the art freaking slaps. Definitely worth a read. (★★★★•)
We decided to cancel our Alamo Season Pass next month, which means we’re putting it to work. Abby and I saw Mean Girls: The Musical: The Movie and I’m happy to say Tiny Fey strikes again! It’s nostalgic, it’s funny, and it’s updated with some hilarious social media clips. (★★★★•)
Speaking of nostalgic movies, we somehow landed on The Mummy for movie night and I surprised to say I think I like it even more now. Hokey 1990’s CGI aside, Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz have an insane amount of chemistry. (★★★••)
Before movie night, we popped over to Mission Taco to try their taco of the month: The Banh Mi. It’s got Vietnamese five-spice chicken, chili crisp aioli, pickled carrot, cucumber serrano sauce, cilantro, and if you’re me, a corn tortilla. The best taco of the month they’ve had to date. (★★★★•)
Abby and I grabbed brunch at The Clover and the Bee and the only thing worth calling out was their Banana Chocolate Chip Muffin…ON THE GRIDDLE!? No joke, we made GF/DF blueberry muffins when we got home and I’ve grilled each and every one on the stovetop. Stop what you’re doing and go give this a shot. I’ll wait… (★★★••)
Thanks to another clutch trip to Local Market, I tried De la Calle’s Tepache Mango Chili Soda and ay dios mio is it one of the best-tasting sodas I’ve ever had!2 I’m planning on going back this weekend, getting a few more cans, and making an N/A Spicy Mango Marg. (★★★★•)
Speaking of Local Harvest, I also stumbled across this Thumbs Up Candy Bar from Go Max Go Foods. Picture this: a Butterfinger, but without the dairy or gluten and a fraction of the added sugar. It’s candy for goddamn adults! (★★★★•)
This was also a great week for coffee. I picked up a bag of Counter Culture Coffee Big Trouble espresso beans and tried them for the first time. It’s smooth, balanced, and will definitely be added to our weekly rotation.3 (★★★••)
Next up was the Ivan Solis Higueronal F1 Costa Rica espresso I got from Quarrelsome Coffee. As someone who has literally tried every coffeeshop in St. Louis (City), I’m hard-pressed to find a better cup of coffee… (★★★★•)
…except for what I’m drinking right this very moment. I’m at Sump Coffee for Study Groop and I decided to try their La Riviera Colombian pour over. The tasting notes say “Tart Strawberry and Dark Chocolate.” Say. Less. (★★★★★)
You made it to the end! As a bonus, I’ll leave you with this.
Cheers,
Billy
He says while bragging.
Sorry, Fresca.
Hey, let me be coffee snob! I’m not drinking so this is all I have!
