Good morning, fam!
Hope you all had a good week!
If you live in St. Louis, then you’re also in the middle of a crazy weekend.
For the uninitiated, STL is home to the second largest Mardi Gras celebration in the world.1 That’s why there’s a good chance this was pre-written (gasp!) and pre-scheduled (double gasp!) - I’m probably enjoying the parade in the eye of the shitstorm that is Soulard.2
Oh, there’s also a teeny Usher concert tomorrow with some sports before and after. Anyone else watching to see if they drop the Deadpool 3 trailer?!
While I try not to get lost or thrown up on, check out this week’s recs.
Grab those beads, chug another (virgin) Hurricane, and let’s get into it.
Here’s what I have for you this morning:
I finally read Zen and the Art of Archery and it was a short but sweet reminder that the final product isn’t always the end goal. It’s about a German philosophy professor who studied archery under one of Japan’s kyudo (archery) masters for SIX YEARS?! and his journey towards understanding Zen Buddhism. (★★★••)
While perusing my happy place,3 I stumbled across The Intellectual Devotional and decided to introduce it into my morning routine. It’s a short, daily lesson from the seven major fields of knowledge that you read over an entire year. I’ve already learned about the origin of the alphabet, Ulysses (the book), and cloning. Maybe I’ll actually be able to contribute during our next trivia night... (★★★★•)
Abby and I decided to let our Alamo Season Passes lapse which means we’re going hard over the next few weeks. We kicked the week off with Argylle and it was…cute? A lot of cool cameos, but the plot was meh and some of the casting choices were downright baffling. I’d wait until it hits streaming. (★★•••)
Next up was American Fiction. It’s movie based on a book about a black author who steers into the skid and gives the market what it wants. Definitely enjoyed it more than Argylle and laughed out loud when Jeffrey Wright’s character pitches an insane title for his book. (★★★★•)
For movie night, we watched The Marvels now that it’s finally available on Disney+ and I definitely like it more than critics did. It’s on the shorter side for a Marvel movie (1 hour 45 minutes) and and the three leads have a decent amount of chemistry, especially Iman Vellani, who plays Ms. Marvel. Entertaining with a cool stinger at the end. (★★★••)
If you’re looking for a movie snack, Abby and I stopped by 7-Eleven on our way to Alamo and randomly picked up Reese’s Popcorn and Nerds Gummy Clusters. Pro tip: mix it together and it will blow your mind. (★★★★•)
Abby and I hit up Stella Blues, a neighborhood dive bar, and we tried their new Korean BBQ wings. Overall, still pretty damn good but not quite what they used to be. If you go, get yourself some bulgogi steak and rice. (★★★★•)
I’m not sure why it took this long, but I re-downloaded Call of Duty Warfare for PS5 and dear God I forgot how much fun it is to pwn a bunch of 15-year-old noobs online. It took a few matches to shake off the rust, but ya boi is now holding his own. (★★★★•)
I made one of the bougiest purchases this week after sitting on it for months and finally got the Ember Cup. What is it? It’s a bluetooth coffee cup with an app that keeps your coffee at the perfect temperature throughout the day. I know, I know. Very extra but I have #noregerts. (★★★★★)
Are you an artist who wants to share their work online. Are you ready to sell out? (★★★★•)
You made it to the end! As a bonus, I’ll leave you with this.
Cheers,
Billy
I think you can guess who’s number one ;)
Soberly of course.
Barnes & Noble of course.
