Good morning, fam!
Hope you all had a good week.
I think I’m finally back to normal after last weekend’s Myrtle Beach marathon. It’s amazing how much lack of sleep messes with you in your thirties. But hey! At least your boy got a little sun.
While I go take a midday nap, check out this week’s recs.
Put your PJ’s back on, hop into bed, and let’s get into it.
Here’s what I have for you this morning:
After sitting on it for way too long, I finally read through Project Hail Mary. As someone who hasn’t read a lot of sci-fi in the past, I was absolutely blown away. The premise: imagine waking up in a spaceship millions of miles from Earth only to realize you are humanity’s only hope from an extinction-level threat. And you’re all by yourself…or are you? Weir once again grounds this amazing story in as much real-life science as possible while also taking readers on a unique ride. (★★★★•)
To prep for the new series on Disney+, I’m going back and rewatching all of X-Men: The Animated Series. I’m only a few episodes in but hot damn does that intro song slap! I defy you to name a better theme song. I’ll wait…(★★★★•)
By now, you’ve probably heard Justin Timberlake came out with a new album (and thank God considering Man of the Woods was pretty cringey). I gave Everything I Thought It Was a listen on Spotify and honestly, I liked it wayyy more than I thought. JT goes back to his pop/R&B vibes which is where he should stay. My personal favorite track was “Down.” (★★★••)
Speaking of JT, I also gave his Tiny Desk Concert a watch and I gotta hand it to him - Sexy Back is still just as good as it was. Him and the Tennessee Kids do an awesome job of breaking it down for the last song in the set. (★★★••)
While hanging out on Surfside Beach for our buddy’s bachelor party, I was sipping on Liquid Death Severed Lime and it was pretty tasty. A little on the sweeter side for flavored water but I’d drink it again. (★★★••)
After getting back to the Lou, I was searching for some more mocktail options and came across this Hella Cocktail Co. Grapefruit Bitters & Soda. I think I struck gold. This will easily be my go-to for this sober summer. (★★★★•)
During the same grocery trip, I found these Dang Coconut Crunch Sticky Rice Chips and Abby and I both agree - they’re just so dang delicious!1 The have just enough sweetness to keep you coming back. (★★★★•)
On the way back from my therapy appointment, I treated myself to Coffee Stamp and dear God I think I found my new favorite batch coffee. This Finca La Alondra was mindblowingly good. I also got a few bonbons which are also a must-try. (★★★★★)
Since we’re on the topic of coffee,2 here’s how to make the perfect cup according to a bonafide food scientist…which is a career I wish I would’ve discovered sooner. (★★★••)
For “Fumbling Forward Friday,”3 I explained to my subscribers why I decided to go with Substack to market my book. If you’re at all interested in e-mail marketing or writing online, you might want to subscribe and check it out. (★★★★•)
You made it to the end! As a bonus, I’ll leave you with this.
Cheers,
Billy
Sorry, I had to ;)
When are we not?
I swear, this is going to be a thing!
