Good morning, fam!
Hope you all had a good week.
Welp, we had the eclipse, Mercury’s in retrograde, and the cicadas are coming.
If I didn’t know better, I would say we might be facing the (gasp!) end of the world!
On second thought, maybe life is random, nothing means anything, and we are simply mere specs existing on a floating rock…
Anyway, while I go ponder my own mortality, check out this week’s recs.
Set those Doomsday Clocks, stock those apocalypse bunkers, and let’s get into it.
Here’s what I have for you this morning:
This week, I read Y/N, a book about a Korean American woman living in Berlin who becomes obsessed with a K-pop idol and travels to Seoul to meet him. It combines one of the weirdest stories I've ever read to date with some of the most beautiful writing. (★★★••)
To prep for the new one, we watched the original Roadhouse last week and I have to say, Patrick Swayze’s got that je ne sais quoi that makes him both dapper and deadly. The movie? It’s bonkers. It jumps from a burley beat ‘em up to more of a “Most Dangerous Game” vibe. (★★★••)
Speaking of the new one, we finally watched the Roadhouse remake this week and dear God, even Jake Gyllenhaal’s abs have abs. It loosely followed the original but this time, it was set in the Florida Keys which means you know there are some insane characters in it. Exhibit A: Conor McGregor?! (★★★••)
Abby and I saw Monkey Man at Alamo and it is one of the most badass movies I’ve seen in a looong time. Imagine creating the story for a movie, co-writing the script, co-producing it, directing it, AND starring in it. Yeah, Dev Patel is a madman. I won’t give too much away but it’s a unique story set in India that deals with crime, corruption, politics, religion, you name it. (★★★★•)
I listened to J. Cole’s surprise album Might Delete Later and it once again proves how he is one of the best lyricists in the game. A ton of great tracks but my personal favorite was “Pricey.” (★★★★•)
To celebrate the eclipse, I found a recipe online for this NA Eclipse cocktail but I made it NA thanks to Pathfinder. It was amazing but I probably shouldn’t have had it last thing before bed. Did I mention it’s espresso based? (★★★★•)
After hearing a lot about it online, I watched The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story. It’s a short, seven-minute film that fits between the two movies and it shares a look at the mental health toll of being Spider-Man. (★★★★★)
Are you also a sauce connoisseur? Check out TasteAtlas’s “Top 57 Condiments in the World” and let me know if you agree with their rankings.1 (★★★••)
Uh oh. Everyone’s favorite bougie grocery store is in trouble. Apparently “We Need to Talk About Trader Joe’s.” (★★★••)
For “Fumbling Forward Friday,” I shared the one question that led to me writing my book. Subscribe and let me know if you have an answer.
You made it to the end! As a bonus, I’ll leave you with this.
Cheers,
Billy
Balsamic vinegar? Really?!
