Good morning, fam!
Hope you all had a good week.
Ours has been absolutely bonkers! (in a very good way)
After starting our whirlwind road trip in San Diego, we’re in Portland and we’re flying back to St. Louis in a few short hours. We’ve seen beaches, mountains, big cities, bigger redwoods, and have created memories that will last a lifetime.1
It’s been fast and furious but we’re ready to get back to our pups and celebrate the holidays with friends and fam.
While I go check into our flight home because I forgot, check out this week’s recs.
Put on your cozy travel joggers, get those noise-canceling headphones, and let’s get into it.
Here’s what I have for you this morning:2
UPDATES
Apparently, the NY Times liked One Too Many’s new (leaked) holiday album FIVE GOLDEN SINGS?! Give it a listen and then snag your tickets to the show to find out who leaked it.
LINKS
San Diego: We stuck to La Jolla for wedding stuff at La Valencia, so we didn’t get to see a ton of San Diego, but it could’ve been worse because the weather/views were on point. On the way out, we obviously had to get Abby her first In-N-Out Burger. This first time was pretty standard, but when we got it again later in the week, we got fancy with their secret menu.3
Los Angeles: The highlight of LA was easily our 3rd-anniversary dinner at Yamashiro. You drive up into the Hollywood Hills and then further up into a private drive where you’re greeted by a JAPANESE MANSION THAT’S OVER 100 YEARS OLD?! The drinks were amazing, the food was amazing (the Toro and A5 Wagyu were fire, and the Matcha Tiramisu and Banana Donuts were the perfect dessert), and the views were second to none. Oh, and the coffee we had on the way out of Santa Monica at goodboybob was maybe the best coffee of the entire trip.
San Francisco: On our first night in town, we stumbled across Bodega SF and ate some of the best Pho we’ve ever had. The next morning, we went to The Coffee Movement, and I had the best Cocoa Cappuccino I’ve ever had. For dinner in the Mission District, we went to Tacos Del Barrio, and I had the best street tacos I’ve ever had. On the way out, we stopped by Saint Frank, and I had one of the best espressos I’ve ever had (with a GF PB&J Blondie). It’s safe to say SF won for best bites.
Klamath: In between SF and Portland, we spent the night in this tiny town because it’s a 10-minute drive to Redwood National Park, which is what we did Friday morning, and DEAR GOD, WAS IT BEAUTIFUL!!! Honestly, it was probably the most memorable nature experience to date, even after some wicked food poisoning the night before.4 Pro tip: If you ever do the Mill Creek Trail, make sure to add on the Grove of Titans loop. Absolutely breathtaking.
Portland: For our final stop, Portland did not disappoint. We stayed at my favorite hotel of the trip (The Dossier). I had some amazing coffee—a Mexican Mocha at Super Joy Coffee and a solid drip at Never Coffee. We picked up a few books at Powell’s City of Books, which is the largest used and new bookstore in the world?! We had an amazing lunch at Cubo with Abby’s aunt and uncle. And we ended our final night at one of the coolest/best-branded dive bars called Sandy Hut. All-in-all, this trip was one for the record books.
You made it to the end! As a bonus, I’ll leave you with this.
Cheers,
Billy
Gag, I know.
P.S. No ratings this week. How do you rate entire cities?!
You HAVE to order the extra crispy fries.
For the love of God, never, EVER eat at Dijon Seafood & Grill in Fort Bragg.
Sounds like an amazing trip! I lived in both LA and LaJolla. California Dreamin' might be a good song for One Too Many. Congrats on the NYT nod!
